How to Document Property Damage for Insurance Claims with Photos

A photographer-approved guide to capturing property damage evidence that strengthens your insurance claim.

Photographs are the most powerful evidence in a property damage insurance claim. Yet many homeowners take insufficient or poorly composed photos that fail to capture the full extent of damage. Learning how to document property damage effectively can be the difference between a fair settlement and an underpayment.

Photo Documentation Best Practices

Start with wide-angle shots of each affected room or area to establish context, then take medium shots of specific damaged areas, and finally close-up shots of individual damage points. Include reference objects like rulers, coins, or your hand to show scale. Photograph all four walls, the ceiling, and floor of every affected room. Capture damage from multiple angles and in natural light when possible. Use your phone's timestamp feature and take a photo of a newspaper or dated document to establish the date.

Do not limit yourself to obvious damage. Photograph subtle signs like water stains, hairline cracks, discoloration, and warping that might indicate underlying structural issues. Take photos of your utility meters, manufacturer labels on damaged equipment, and any receipts or documentation you can find for damaged items. The more thorough your photo documentation, the harder it is for an adjuster to dispute the scope of your loss.
